Fifth
Sunday in Ordinary Time

“The
fever left her and she began to wait on them.”
One
of the lovely features of the Gospels is the number
of healing stories they contain. Nothing is too
big or too small to bring to Jesus. He raised
Lazarus from the dead; he healed Peter’s
mother-in-law from a fever. That same Jesus is
with us and among us with the same power and the
same longing, to heal us into wholeness. All we
have to do is ask him for what we need for ourselves
and for one another and know that he will answer.
We all need his healing power in so far as we
set limits to our love for one another because
his great commandment is to love. Husbands and
wives often need to stretch their love into forgiveness
if they are to go forward together. Parents need
to grow in understanding of their children. And
in our faith community we need Christ’s
power to help us to take true responsibility for
those in need.

Johnny Doherty, C.Ss.R.

Parish Life: Ministries/Responsibility:
The
Parish depends on the people of the Parish. In
the Parish, Christ calls on us to carry out different
ministries or service. He calls on the people
of the parish to carry out these ministries, at
Mass, and elsewhere. People are called by Christ.
They are not called by the priest. It is true
that in the past these ministries were carried
out by priests. But that is not true anymore.
Yet it is often said in the media that our parishes
exclude lay people, and that Lay people have no
say. This is simply untrue. It may have been true
in the past, but it is not true now. We are only
responsible for now. We are only responsible for
the future. However it is true that many lay people
don’t want involvement, because they don’t
want responsibility. Many people don’t accept
the call of baptism, or don’t understand
the call of baptism. In fact priests are disheartened
by their lack of involvement. It is not true that
the priest excludes them. We have seen here in
our own parish that some people became Eucharistic
Ministers, and hadn’t the commitment to
continue their ministry. They got lost on the
way. We pray therefore that this lack of respect
to Jesus in the Eucharist will never happen again.
Jesus is really, truly, and substantially present
in the Eucharist. It is a privilege to be a Eucharistic
Minister. Other people don’t join us on
Sunday but go elsewhere. They too opt out of any
responsibility to the people of the parish. They
talk about “getting in Mass”, but
we are called to celebrate Mass. They too get
lost on the way. They are running from the responsibility
of their baptism. In Baptism Jesus calls them
to ministry with their people. We have only to
think of all the talent in music, reading, etc
who are not with us. If our people used their
talents for each other we would be a great people,
and a great parish. Our young people would join
us. Instead we have abandoned our young people.
But not all have done so. We have many who understand.
We find the Gospel understanding of “Ministry”
in the document we have given to all. We are called
to grow where we are planted. Our parish is a
parish owned by the people. The priest is the
visible centre of unity by ordination. We ask
people to give their time and talents to their
people and their parish. Let’s build a great
present and a great future parish together. This
is Gods will for you. This is our Faith; this
is the Faith of the Church. We are proud to profess
it in Christ Jesus.
Statement for Notices or Parish Bulletin:
I
wish to inform the priests and people of the diocese
of Clogher that contrary to misinterpretations
printed on the front pageant expanded in a feature
article titled a special investigation on Thursday
12th January 2012 in the Irish News, the two priests
named as having worked in the diocese of Clogher
were not at any time being paid by the diocese
since leaving priestly ministry. This may be an
important assurance to the faithful in relation
to the use of their contributions to their parish
and diocese.
