23rd Sunday in Ordinary Time

Sunday, 5th September 2010

Jesus said to the crowds: “None of you can be my disciple unless you give up all your possessions”. Sometimes the teachings of Jesus seem impossible to follow, and this is certainly one of them! Because of this difficulty some people give up while others simply ignore it and go on their way. When Jesus talks about possessions he is not condemning them as evil but rather calling on us to look at the evil effect that they have on our hearts and lives and because of that to put them in their proper place. Possessions possess us so easily. The more we have the more of our energy and attention have to go into protecting what we have. We can become very self-centred and forget our responsibility to care for one another. Even within our homes and families, our possessions can become more important than the people we love. They certainly become more important than taking care of the poor of our world.

Fr. Johnny Doherty, C.Ss.R

Welcome/Baptism:

We welcome into the Parish Community-A Community of Faith—Grace Corrigan, Tattykeeran, Tempo who was baptized in the Church of the Immaculate Conception on Sunday 29th August 2010. May her home be one of prayer, happiness, joy and peace?

Graveyard Collection:

The Graveyard Committee would like to take the opportunity to congratulate and thank all who contributed to the graveyard collection on the day of the Blessing of the Extension to the graveyard, and the blessing of the graves. The collection amounted to £6874.46 and E150 + an anonymous donation of £1000.00 through the door of the priest’s house during the previous weeks. So the total in all amounted to £8000.00 Circe. We are glad that the reaction of our parishioners is so positive and uplifting. Many people have expressed great praise and joy in the finished work. We thank Canon Tom Breen also for his help and presence for the blessing of the new part of the graveyard, and also for his many kind words of support and congratulations to the Graveyard Committee for its forward thinking and leadership in carrying out this much needed work. As he reminded us it is important that we show great respect for our deceased, and that we pray for them in action and in word. We can be happy that we do so, and long live this tradition among us. Our graveyard is not only a sacred place, but it also looks like a sacred place. This is due to the generosity of our parishioners. We wish also to express our thanks on behalf of the Parish of Pobal to Kathleen Breen, and to her late husband Mick (now in a better place) for donating the ground outside the graveyard wall, which has now been beautified with tarmac. It does look so well, and puts the finishing touches on the entry as we go in to pray. We wish to congratulate and thank Mr Hugh McElroy who has been involved in the work of the graveyard for nearly half a century. He has not only been involved in digging graves in the past, but over the years, he has been available to help in the choosing and picking of graves at the time of a death in the family. In this way he has been very helpful to so many families in their bereavement, and has been with them at a very vulnerable time in their lives. During the recent work he has been a constant help to the men who worked on the renovation and has been the eye and ear of the committee at all times. We know that the parish would want us to recognise this contribution at this time. We congratulate Thomas Doherty also who makes us feel proud of the graveyard each time we enter it. His work speaks for itself. We thank Martin Owens who installed the sound system for the Blessing. Needless to say we will need more money as one cannot have a good job without money but more about that at another time. The important thing is that all are happy and proud of the work to date.

More Good News/Gift Aid:
We have received the cheque for Gift Aid for this year. It amounted to £7359.00. We remind all again of the importance of signing a Gift Aid sheet if you pay tax. You are supporting yourself by supporting your Parish. Again the finance Committee wish to than all who have done so. Their generosity in doing so can be seen in the amount received in this cheque. We are very grateful to Eugene Maguire who helps the parish with Gift Aid in his usual quiet and competent way.

Back to School:
We welcome our teachers and children back to school, and we hope that all will have a fruitful and happy year. We wish the parents of the children every blessing as they begin a new school year. We encourage you to make sure that your children come to Mass with you every Sunday during the year so that they get a truly Christian education. We know that you want the best for your children, and only Jesus can give them the best.

Eucharistic Congress:
The Eucharistic Congress will be held in Ireland in 2012. We should renew our understanding and love for the Mass, and the Eucharist. Nothing should separate us from the love of God made visible in the Eucharist. He becomes present for us.
