The 17th Sunday in Ordinary Time

“So I (Jesus) say to you: ask and it will be given to you; search and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you.” The greatest power that we have is undoubtedly the power of prayer. And unfortunately it’s a power that we don’t use often enough. The three words that Jesus uses here are dynamic words that have to involve us at a personal level. Ask: to do this we have to decide what we are really looking for in marriage and family life as well as in our parish and then we have to be willing to invest ourselves in it. Search: if what we are looking for is important to us we will be willing to change to find it and to change even more having found it. So many people want everything but without any cost and this is not the way of the Lord. Knock: God wants us to come to him with confidence but then to abandon ourselves into his hands, knowing that we will be well looked after.

Ordination of New Bishop:

Monsignor Liam McDaid will be ordained Bishop of Clogher in St Macartans Cathedral, Monaghan today at 3.00pm. We pray that he will find health and happiness in his new vocation. We pray that the Holy Spirit will direct and guide him to preach the Gospel. We pray that we will respond to the Gospel with a new heart, and mind. In the ceremony of ordination the new bishop is reminded in symbol of his role among us. The book of the Gospel is held over him; his life must be a life lived in the light of the Gospel. A ring is placed on his finger; it is a seal of his fidelity to the people of God. He receives the Crosier (or Pastoral Staff) to remind him that he must be like a shepherd watching over the flock in his care. A Bishops Mitre is placed on his head reminding him of his responsibility as a leader. He is ordained by the age old sign of hands outstretched over him, setting him apart. He is anointed with Chrism, as a sign of his new dignity. All of these signs in their different ways remind him once more that his life is no longer fully his own. All of these signs remind us also that the life of a follower of Jesus is no longer his own – a Christian is sent to serve and not to be served.
